Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi after commissioning the 3500 XL Genetic Analyzer also visited the Forensic criminalistics unit and was taken through the process of analysis and identification of Narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances
The FORENSIC CRIMINALISTICS unit deals with analysis involving substances derived from crime scenes for criminal investigations which include analysis and identification of:
- Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic substances
- Explosives and explosive residues
- Gun powder residues
- Suspected contaminated alcoholic beverages
- Counterfeit products like Money, beverages, fertilizers
- Fire accelerants in arson cases
- Paint and glass from scenes of crime and motor vehicle accidents
- Poisonous chemical substances in foods and drinks
- Unknown substances
Other duties include:
- Preparation of etching reagents for restoration of defaced engine/chassis numbers
- Preparation of finger print reagents for lifting finger prints
- preparation of APQ (Anthracene, Phenolphthalein and quinine) reagents for treating money in corruption cases
- Attending scenes of crime for collection of samples
